Tata Punch.ev: Milestone – The Hindu BusinessLine

Tata Motors might’ve had a stellar display at the Bharat Mobility Expo, but the company’s celebrations started a month ago, having achieved something extraordinary. Tata Motors managed to dethrone Maruti Suzuki, claiming the spot for the highest-selling car in the country. The crown goes to the Tata Punch, which became the top seller in 2024, thus proving to be the ultimate redemption for the endless work the carmaker has put in to not just come out of a sales slump but also offer some very decent products to Indian customers. Furthering that celebration, Tata Motors has also announced that the company has produced more than 5 lakh units of the Punch. We take the stellar Punch.ev for a spin to understand what makes it click with the Indian car buyer.

Decent cabin

The Punch.ev carries a fresher face, resembling that of its larger brethren and distinctly more modern than the standard iteration of the car. It’s not too different from the side and rear except for the EV badges. It has an overall clean styling, but the shape and confident stance make it look quite appealing. The sentiment only grows stronger when you step inside as the Punch’s cabin is definitely a nice place to be — in the segment, at least. Compared to the standard/ICE version, the Punch.ev has better seats with ventilation and white upholstery. A 10.25-inch infotainment display is complemented by a similarly large instrument cluster for the driver. In addition to an inbuilt app store (you can even get games and popular streaming services on that), the system also offers the usual smartphone connectivity suites. The new steering wheel with Tata’s illuminated logo on the centre is something to behold, but it is also a fingerprint magnet. The overall quality of the cabin seems top-notch.

Decent space

Despite its small footprint (which is a boon in the urban environment), space isn’t an issue in the Punch, both for the front and rear passengers. There’s also a large sunroof, which tends to fill the cabin with light (when you need it), thus making it appear more spacious.

You can spec the Punch.ev with either a 25 kWh battery which comes with an 80 bhp/11.62 kg-m motor, or a larger 35 kWh battery with a 120 bhp/19.37 kg-m motor. The former has a claimed range of 315 km on a single charge, whereas the latter is 421 km. In our test, the latter delivered an excellent real-world economy of about 380 km.

In terms of ride and handling, the Punch seems to be slightly stiffly sprung, but it results in a confident drive throughout. There are three driving modes to choose from; ‘City’ seems to be a good balance, ‘Sport’ is addictive thanks to the instant torque, and ‘Eco’ is self-explanatory. The regenerative braking system also has multiple levels, and if you put it in the highest setting, you can very comfortably enjoy single-pedal driving in the city.

The Punch.ev is priced between ₹9.99 lakh and ₹14.44 lakh, ex-showroom. While that’s some premium over the ICE version, it’s also more stylish and better equipped. The Punch’s sales milestone is quite an achievement, and if you’re looking for an urban, all-electric SUV, there aren’t many alternatives to this pretty solid car by Tata Motors.
