This is not the first time a long-wheelbase (LWB) model has been launched by BMW, and by looks of it, there’s no reason for the German carmaker to stop this practice either. Following the standard-spec iX1 all-electric SUV from last year, which was also the most approachable of its kind from the company, BMW has now launched the iX1 eDrive 20L. Not just added practicality and space, the new model benefits from improved performance and useable range while still offering great value for money. Launched at ₹49 lakh, ex-showroom, the iX1 LWB promises to be an attractive choice for premium electric car buyers.

In terms of overall appearance, not much has changed. The iX1 LWB looks similar to the conventionally powered model except for bits like the front grille, which continues with BMW’s traditional design but with a modern EV-focussed twist. Flanking the grille are the LED projector headlights, which add some character to the car’s styling. Adding to that are the 18-inch wheels and the bold diffuser at the rear, among other bits. There are five colours to choose from, and the M Carbon Black, which was specced on the test car, looks stunning, to say the least. The overall shape isn’t disturbed by the extended wheelbase, and it’s an assertive but clean design complemented by flush door handles and aluminium roof rails.

It’s a typical BMW cabin — shared with the X1 in terms of design and feel — and it doesn’t take too long for the 10.25-inch instrument panel and the 10.7-inch infotainment system to capture all your attention

Seat comfort

It’s worth noting that at 2,800 mm, the iX1 LWB is 112 mm longer than the standard X1 and is the longest car in the segment. This makes it more sizeable on the road and opens up room inside. It’s a typical BMW cabin — shared with the X1 in terms of design and feel — and it doesn’t take too long for the 10.25-inch instrument panel and the 10.7-inch infotainment system to capture all your attention. The 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system performs exceptionally well regardless of your favourite genre of music. In addition, the leatherette upholstery and panoramic sunroof are worth noting because both heighten how the cabin feels. Regarding seat comfort, the iX1 has it covered better than others in the segment. The front seats offer superb lumbar support, while at the rear, one can’t help but be amazed by the amount of legroom that’s available.

Effortless to drive

The BMW iX1 LWB draws energy from a 66.4 kWh battery, which gives it a claimed range of 531 km on a full charge. Its 201 bhp/25.49 kWh battery lends the car a fairly spirited personality — reflected by a 0-100 km/h time of 8.6 seconds. Its instant torque makes the iX1 LWB effortless to drive through traffic, enabling quick overtakes possible without trying too hard. The iX1 LWB misses out on the ‘Boost’ paddle from the previous generation, but with active and adaptive recuperation, one-pedal driving is possible. The ride quality, too, is well-sorted, and the iX1 LWB has no issues dealing with road imperfections. The low centre of gravity aids the car’s handling, and corners can be tackled without losing even a tiny bit of confidence.

Using the standard 11 kW AC charger, the iX1 LWB can be charged fully in just 6 hours and 30 minutess. DC charging is possible, too, and the car can be fast-charged using DC chargers of up to 130 kW. In addition to standard safety features, the SUV gets eight airbags, adaptive cruise control, and Level 2 ADAS.

The iX1 Long Wheelbase is priced at ₹49 lakh, ex-showroom, and at that price, it undercuts rivals like the Mercedes-Benz EQA and Volvo EX40 while offering a longer wheelbase without compromising on overall quality or performance.
